In our classes.....
Small Heading
9/6/16

It's finally here...the first day of school! This is where I will update you on all the great things that will be happening in your child's Spanish class. Usually I will beak this down by grade, but for this week the concepts are the same, so I am going to share the general plan for all of the grades with whom I work:

During this first week of school, we will start to work on establishing a sense of community. This is crucial. When students feel safe and valued, and can have a genuine vested interest in the class, then real learning can take place. We will be doing activities to get to know each other, as well as going over basic vocabulary and classroom procedures. My mission is to establish a comfortable, but challenging classroom environment...and I know we are going to get off on a great start!!

9/12/16

What a great start! It has been tremendous meeting all of your children and beginning the process of getting to know each other and work together and establish our community. I am looking forward to meeting you also at both Back To School Nights!

(Middle School: this Thursday 9/15 at 6:30pm, and Elementary: next Thursday 9/22 at 6:30pm ).

Kindergarten: Kindergarten will continue to work on greetings. (Ask about the "Hola"song, sung to the tune of "London Bridge"! ) The students are also going to be setting up and starting to work in their notebooks with information about themselves!

1st Grade: First grade will continue to work on greetings. (Ask about the "Hola"song, sung to the tune of "London Bridge"! ) The students are also going to be setting up and starting to work in their notebooks with information about themselves! In addition, they will get to "meet" the two main characters in their brand new textbooks. These charcters will introduce the students to multiple Spanish-speaking countries over the course of the year! **Please look for a letter coming home regarding the new textbooks. This letter needs to signed and returned.

2nd Grade: Second grade will continue to work on greetings. (After Wednesday, ask about the "Buenos Días"song and the accompanying actions!) The students are also going to be setting up and starting to work in their notebooks with information about themselves! In addition, they will get to "meet" the two main characters in their brand new textbooks. These charcters will introduce the students to multiple Spanish-speaking countries over the course of the year! **Please look for a letter coming home regarding the new textbooks. This letter needs to signed and returned.

4th Grade: Fourth grade will continue to work on greetings and introducing themselves and others. They will start to learn the alphabet and vowels, and the concept of Spanish being a phonetic language (my goal here is to increase the students' confidence with the language...that yes, they CAN do this!)) The students are also going to be setting up and starting to work in their notebooks with information about themselves! In addition, they will get to "meet" the two main characters in their brand new textbooks. These charcters will introduce them to multiple Spanish-speaking countries over the course of the year!**Please look for a letter coming home regarding the new textbooks. This letter needs to signed and returned.

5th Grade: Fifth grade will continue to work on greetings and introducing themselves and others. They will start to learn the alphabet and vowels, and the concept of Spanish being a phonetic language (which achieved my goal today of giving many students a burst of confidence!) In addition, they will get to "meet" the two main characters in their brand new textbooks. These charcters will introduce them to multiple Spanish-speaking countries over the course of the year! The first is going to be Bolivia.

**Please look for a letter coming home regarding the new textbooks. This letter needs to signed and returned.

Middle School: Middle School will continue to work on greetings and introducing themselves and others. They will start to learn the alphabet and vowels, and the concept of Spanish being a phonetic language (which achieved my goal today of giving many students a burst of confidence!) We will also be predicting and discussing where there are large populations of Hispanic people in the U.S, what the students might know and like about Hispanic culture and customs, and how this compares with their own. In addition, the students will learn how to express a number of action verbs (ending in -ar) and the idea of "I like/ don't like (to talk on the phone).

9/16/16

We are making nice progress! Your children are engaging with their classmates and myself and getting familiar with the expectations (academic and social) that have been established and will make our learning community successful! It was lovely getting to meet some of you middle school parents last week, and I am looking forward to meting many of you elementary parents and caregivers this Thursday at Back to School Night, 6:30 to 8:00.

Kindergarten: We have expanded our greetings to include Good morning, afternoon, and evening. Ask your child about our "Buenos Días" song with accompanying actions! We are having fun learning color words and by the end of the week we will be starting to talk about our families : )

First Grade: First Graders have expanded our greetings to include Good morning, afternoon, and evening. Ask your child about our "Buenos Días" song with accompanying actions! They have learned of our first "trip"...to Mexico! We are also having fun learning color words and by the end of the week we will be starting to talk about our families : )

Second Grade: Second graders have been doing small role-plays as we have been expanding on our greetings. They have also learned of our first "trip"...to Mexico! They were asking great questions when we started our introduction and were excited to share their stories of traveling and why it is so important to get to know other cultures. By the end of the week we will be starting to talk about our families : )

Fourth Grade: Fourth Graders have learned of their first "travelng" destination...Nicaragua! We have done some work with maps to get a sense of where it is in relation to us, and had a good conversation as to why it is so important to get to know other cultures.  They continue to have opportunities to get familiar with the alphabet and proper vowel pronunciation. By the end of the week we will be starting to talk about our families : )

Fifth Grade: Fifth Graders have learned of their first "travelng" destination...Bolivia! We have done some work with maps to get a sense of where it is in relation to us, and have had a good conversation as to why it is so important to get to know other cultures. They continue to have opportunities to get familiar with the alphabet and proper vowel pronunciation. By the end of the week we will be starting to talk about our families : )

Middle School: Middle Schoolers have been active participants in a discussion regarding Hispanic culture and how it compares to their own experiences. They are learning (or refrshing their memories!) on the days of the week, weather, and numbers. This week we are focusing on numbers up to thirty and are taking an interdisciplinary approach. I have introduced mathematical terms and we are going to be solving basic (for now!) equations. In addition, by the end of the week the students will learn how to express a number of action verbs (ending in -ar) and the idea of "I like/ don't like to  (example)  talk on the phone. This will all lay the groundwork for our first project, which will begin next week.

What a  productive and language-rich week with your children! It was wonderful getting to meet some of you middle school parents last Thursday; it really is a tremendous community here at YSCP! Please see what good things are in store for this upcoming week:

Kindergarten: We have been having a wonderful time learning and singing about colors. Your children are starting to make connections and notice colors in their surroundings outside of the actual class activities, which is terrific! We just introduced the topic of families and will continue with that theme this week. If you could send in a family photo, I would really appreciate it. Students love talking about their own realities, and it would make their communication even more genuine!   : )

First Grade: First Graders have been gradually hearing about the days of the week and have been having a wonderful time learning and singing about colors. Your children are starting to make connections and notice colors in their surroundings outside of the actual class activities, which is the goal and is terrific! We just introduced the topic of families and will continue with that theme this week. If you could send in a family photo, I would really appreciate it. Students love talking about their own realities, and it would make their communication even more

genuine!   : )

Second Grade: Second Graders have been working on producing and writing the days of the week, as well as using their colors and greetings in small role-plays. We will introduce the topic of families this week. If you could send in a family photo, I would really appreciate it. Students love talking about their own realities, and it would make their communication even more genuine!   : )

Fourth Grade: Fourth Graders have been working on producing and writing the date and the days of the week, as well as getting more familiar with using their colors and greetings. They continue to have opportunities to get familiar with the alphabet and proper vowel pronunciation. We just introduced the topic of families and will move forward with that theme this week. If you could send in a family photo, I would really appreciate it. Students love talking about their own realities, and it would make their communication even more

genuine!     : )

Fifth Grade: Fifth Graders have been expanding their vocabulary related to greetings and salutations and learning about the distinction used when addressing others with different levels of formality. This week they will learn the numbers 1- 20 and will be introduced to the topic of families. (If you could send in a family photo, I would really appreciate it.) They will then have the opportunity to be writers and actors and perform their own skits!

Middle School: Middle Schoolers have been doing a good job working on math equations and other "real-life" number situations in Spanish. We will continue to expand on their -AR verb vocabulary, as well as introduce the concept of conjugation and subject pronouns. This will give them the tools to complete their first project: to create their own FBI profile. : )

On a more logistical note, please remind your students that they need to come to class prepared every day with a binder, full-sized notebook, and folder. (The last two need to be exclusively for Spanish.) Classwork is a big percentage of their grade, and they can not be successful on assignments if they do not have the necessary tools or previously introduced information. Most students are doing a great job with this, but please check in with your student regarding this important Spanish requirement (and life-skill!) Thank you.

10/2/16

Can you believe we are turning a new calendar page? Time definitely flies when you are having fun, and we are having a lot of it in Spanish class, along with good engagement and learning!!

Kindergarten: We are going to continue to do activities revolving around the theme of "Families" and "Colors", while also introducing number vocabulary. The students have really enjoyed listening to and making comments/connections with the story books we have read. We will read approximately two stories a week as this is a wonderful way for students to be exposed to genuine Spanish input in a format that is meaningful to them! A little reminder, please: if you are able, please send in a family photo. Even if it is your child and one other person that is important to them, they would be very excited to share it with the class : )

Second Grade: Second Graders are going to continue to do activities revolving around the theme of "Families" and "Colors", while also being introduced to number vocabulary. They really enjoyed listening to and making predictions/connections with the first Spanish story book we read.  This is a great way to capture the students' interest and  recycle previously introduced vocabulary. A little reminder, please: if you are able, please send in a family photo. Even if it is your child and one other person that is important to them, they would be very excited to share it with the class : )

Fourth Grade: Fourth Graders have had a good time singing and learning the names of family members! They will continue to work on activities involving family and number vocabulary, as well as recognizing cognates in written and spoken Spanish. This latter element is a great confidence builder for students as we move into exposure to  more complex language.

Fifth Grade: Fifth Graders have been working extremely diligently on their skits involving greetings and salutations and will be presenting them at the beginning of the week! They will continue to work on activities involving family and number vocabulary, as well as recognizing cognates in written and spoken Spanish. This latter element is a great confidence builder for students as we move into exposure to more complex language.

Middle School: Middle Schoolers are going to be completing and presenting their first project, a personal profile! A big goal of mine as an educator is to create a sense of community in the classroom, where individuals feel respected and heard. The students have been very respectful towards each other whenever someone is answering or sharing, and I am very proud of them. In case anyone is getting pre-presentation nerves, please remind them that we are all in this together and everyone will be supportive! ( They will be able to sit vs. stand if that puts them more at ease : )

10/10/16

Another great week in Spanish class, building on previously introduced material and providing opportunities to gain confidence using it in new ways!

Kindergarten: We are going to continue having fun with numbers while using manipulatives and students will have an opportunity to play learning games with a partner!

First Grade: First Graders are going to continue having fun with numbers while using manipulatives and students will have an opportunity to play learning games with a partner!

Second Grade: Second Graders have been very busy talking (and singing!) about family members! They are going to be introduced to number vocabulary and have fun while using manipulatives and playing learning games with a partner!

Fourth Grade: Fourth Graders have been very busy talking (and singing!) about family members! They are going to be introduced to number vocabulary and have an opportunity to play learning games with a partner, as well as be the "teacher" and lead some class activities!

Fifth Grade: Fifth Graders only started to present their skits last week, so they will be completing the presentations this week. The few that were done have been excellent, and everyone is looking forward to seeing the rest of their classmates in acting-mode!

Middle School: Middle Schoolers only started to present their personal profiles last week,

so they will be completing the presentations this week. The ones that were done have been great! On the other hand, some students either forgot their projects at home, or did not do them. I would appreciate all of your help in reminding your students to actively use their planners so that they can be successful with all of their assignments. This week, students will also be introduced to subject pronouns and the verb "ser" (to be/permanent: let your children explain this distinction to you : ) The motivation will be that they can stop just talking about themselves and talk about others...in a good way, of course!

10/16/16

Unfortunately this is a very short school week, so I will not do our normal format. However, the good news is that I will have the opportunity to meet or see many of you at the Parent/Teacher conferences this Thursday and Friday! If you would like to make an appointment, please go to signupgenius.com, and search via my email address (hopp@yscp.org).

FALL 2023

I can not believe we are  getting ready to turn another page in our calendars! Time definitely flies when we are learning, being challenged , and having fun all simultaneously! It is another short week, but please see below to check out all that will be going on in class!

Kindergarten- I am very sorry to say that this will be our last week together.  As happened last semester, after Spring Break your child will be rotating to a new Spanish teacher. I want to say that it has been a true pleasure and honor spending this time with your child. Thank you! This week we will be doing lots of review and having a little goodbye party!

First- Fifth Grade: This week we are going to review numbers and challenge ourselves to go higher!

Middle School: We are practicing different forms of telling time in meaningful contexts to students.

It is great to get back into Spanish-action!

First- Fifth Grade: We are going to get our brains back into Spanish mode with some general review, and then move into the fun topic of clothing!

Middle School: We are going to become re-acclimated to Spanish with some general review of previously introduced topics. Also, we are going to take a step back from the topic of time for now and introduce the historically engaging topic of clothing!

Kindergarten: We are going to have a lot of fun getting to know each other as we get our brains back into Spanish mode with engaging review activities!

3/20/17

Where is Spring???

Due to all snow days, we are moving forward with the plans from last week and crossing our fingers for warmer days!! :)

3/27/17

Lots of engaging Spanish on the horizon for this week!

Kindergarten:It has been tremendous getting to know and work with your little people! This week we are introducing a yummy topic: fruits and vegetables!

First- Fifth Grade: We are starting on a new topic of clothing, within the context of debating if YSCP should have school uniforms! It is proving already today to prove to be a very engaging topic...which is achieving my goal of having the students excited to participate both orally and in written form!

Middle School: We are starting on a new topic of clothing, within the context of debating if YSCP should have school uniforms! It is proving already today to prove to be a very engaging topic...which is achieving my goal of having the students excited to participate both orally and in written form!

4/3/17

This is a very unique week for Spanish because of state PSSA testing and the necessary proctoring schedule. Unfortunately, I will not get to see many of your children, and for others it will be only for a limited time. I cant wait to get them all back into Spanish-world the following week!

Kindergarten -Second Grade: We will not have class this week.

Third- Fifth Grade: We will meet for a short class and use the time to play educational Spanish games as they switch gears from testing mode!

Middle School: We will not have class this week.

4/10/17

It is a mini-week, but we are going to maximize every minute!

I'm a paragraph. Click here to add your own text and edit me. It's easy.

Kindergarten : We will continue to explore the topic of fruits and vegetables.

First- Fifth Grade: Clothing will continue to be our focus this week.

Middle School: We are going to re-visit the topic of time.

4/17/17

Hope you all enjoyed some time off and extra family time! Back to Spanish world!

Kindergarten: As we have fun while engaging in different speaking, writing, listening (and singing and acting!) activities involving fruit and vegetables, I hope that translates into your child wanting to eat more of them at home :)

First- Fifth Grade: This week we start exploring the topic of telling time, which is a subject that students historically enjoy because it provides the backdrop for them to talk about activities that are real and important to them, and do it in Spanish!

Middle School: Although we will be wrapping up our official discussion of time, the students will be using it often in future classes and projects. We will also be diving into the subject of verbs and conjugating them (I sing / She sings/ etc). This is awesome because time provides the backdrop for them to talk about activities that are real and important to them. They will be genuinely communicating in Spanish!

4/25/17

Kindergarten: We are putting the finishing touches on our unit about fruits and vegetable which is a good thing because I am starting to feel really hungry! We are also going to start to learn a new song that you will get the chance to see during the Butterfly Picnic on May 25th.

First-Fifth Grade: We are going to continue mastering the art of telling time! We are also getting some good review in with games after all the PSSA testing!

Middle school: Due to the PSSA testing schedule we will have a minimal time together, but we will continue exploring the wonderful world of verb conjugation!

5/9/17

Bienvenidos and Welcome to the sun! We have a great week planned!

Kindergarten: We had a super time working in groups, presenting to the class and then voting on what fruits and vegetables our favorite smoothie would include! We were going to wrap up this week with actually making  real smoothies in class, but because of the field trip, we will have to save this for next week!

First-Fifth Grade: After exploring the Mexican holiday of "Cinco de Mayo", we are going to get a little start on our next unit, the wonderful world of animals!

***Fifth grade will have an exciting opportunity to be an audience member at the Middle School's re-enactment of a Roman court! This will allow them to get a glimpse of what is in store for them next year!

Middle school: The students are going to be developing their analytical skills as we delve into the Mexican holiday of "Cinco de Mayo", and rising to the challenge of using all the Spanish they have learned thus far in genuinely communicative exchanges in class!

5/15/17

Our last full week of school before summer break...I can not believe it! We are going to make every second count : )

Kindergarten: First, a lot of talking and eating in Spanish as we make our own fruit smoothies in class to share...then we are going to start our next exciting topic of animals!

First-Third Grade: We are going to delve into the animal kingdom!

Fourth -Fifth Grade: We are going to be building on previously learned material related to our school environment and will be able to communicate meaningfully in Spanish about things  that are important to us!

Middle School: The students are using what they have learned about verbs thus far to propel them into a deeper understanding of new verbs...all of  which is giving them the confidence to really communicate in Spanish!

5/29/17

With the Monday holiday and Field Day and field trips on Friday, it is a super short school-day week...so some classes I will only see one time : (

but we are going to maximize every minute with Spanish fun and learning!

Kindergarten: We are going to explore more in the animal kingdom and your children will get to be the "experts" on the butterfly cycle...I will just help them to do it in Spanish!

First-Third Grade: After having fun at the farm, we are starting to explore the tropical rain-forest!

Fourth -Fifth Grade: We are going to do a little exploring into the animal kingdom!

Middle School:  The students have been working very hard on their final projects, describing their schedules and activities both in and out of school. They will be wrapping them up this week and sharing them with the class!
