ABOUT ME

Hola! My name is Phyllis Hopp and I am your child's Spanish teacher this year. I am so excited to start working together!

As shared in my Welcome Letter, I have been an educator for over twenty years both here and abroad, in the areas of Spanish and English as a Second Language. I recently attended Penn State and obtained my Pennsylvania Teacher Certification for Spanish, Kindergarten through Eighth Grade. In addition, I have achieved my M.A. in Applied Linguistics from the City University of NewYork at Queens College. I feel extremely fortunate to have been welcomed so warmly into the Young Scholars community where learning other languages and cultures is so highly valued!

I am not a native speaker of Spanish; I am first generation American born to Irish immigrant parents. Growing up in NYC, my block was filled with people from more countries than I could name, and because my parents are tremendously generous and open people, I spent many nights having someone at our dinner table or on our couch whose first language was not English. When I walked into my first Spanish class in ninth grade, I had another undeserved but incredibly appreciated life gift presented in front of me... a teacher who was passionate about Spanish and creating that same excitement in her students. All of these experiences laid the groundwork for the educator I am today. My goal is always to help students find personal value in learning Spanish and connecting to other cultures!

My husband and I have three teenagers and, whenever we can make it work, I love to travel with my family. We always invite my parents along too, whether it is to Mexico or on a roadtrip to some state we have never been, and we all love the adventure! I also love to read and dance. Two of my favorites are the waltz and salsa, and I have to confess that I am often guilty of dancing in the aisles of the grocery store!
